How to Start Making Comics: A Beginner’s Guide to Comic Storytelling

Have you ever wanted to tell your own stories with pictures and words? Comics are a super fun way to do just that! In this post, you’ll get simple “workouts” to help you start making your own comics from scratch. We’ll look at how your favorite comics use pictures and panels to tell stories, and you’ll learn how to copy and create your own. Imitating great comics is a fantastic first step-let’s get started!

Step 1: Blocking In Graphic Shapes

First, pick your favorite comic. It could be one that made you want to draw, or just one you love to read! Look at at least three panels from that comic. Your job is to block in the big shapes-don’t worry about details yet. Just see how the shapes fit together, kind of like building with blocks. This helps you understand how artists plan their pages and tell stories with pictures.

Step 2: Turn Graphic Shapes into Mannequins

Now, take those big graphic shapes and draw over them with simple forms-like mannequins. This is great practice for seeing things in a simple way. Breaking things down into easy shapes is a superpower for artists! It helps you draw anything you want, just like the pros.

Step 3: Study for Style and Details

If you have read one of our previous blog posts called: 6 steps to draw anything, then you know what’s next: imitation! Pick your favorite panel from your comic and try copying it as closely as you can. This is called imitation, and it’s a great way to learn what makes your favorite comics look special. Notice the lines, the way they draw faces, or how they add details. Try different things and have fun experimenting!

Step 4: Create Your Unique Comic

Now it’s your turn to make your own comic! Use what you learned from blocking shapes, building mannequins, and copying styles. If you’re just starting, try making a tiny story in three frames. If you’re feeling bold, go wild and make something bigger! This is your chance to tell any story you want-so have fun and be creative.
