Master Fantasy Hammer Drawing: 3 Simple Techniques for Beginners

Ever wanted to wield a mighty hammer in your own fantasy world? You don't need to be a master artist to bring your imagination to life! In just 5 minutes, I'll break down the core principles of drawing a cool fantasy hammer, even if you're a complete beginner. We'll skip the complex stuff and focus on simple techniques that make a big impact. Get ready to learn box rounding, carving, and cylinder tricks that will transform your drawings from basic to epic in no time.

1. Mastering Box Rounding: The Foundation of Fantasy Weapon Design

Let’s talk about single and multiple rounding of boxes! Single rounding alters only one side of a box in an orthographic view.

Multiple rounding alters all sides. It’s like projecting outward and connecting the corner of the projected plane to the rounded corner.

2. Carving Techniques: Shaping Your Fantasy Hammer

Next, we will jump over to box carving. We shave off pieces of a box in any direction. The easiest way is to project a 2D plane in perspective and connect the dots. As you get more confident, you can carve out shapes intuitively.

We can carve the the cylinders in a similar way as above. We start carving cylinders in one orthographic view, like a straight-on side view, to understand how to carve.

3. Advanced Cylinder Manipulation: Bringing Your Hammer to Life

These are the fundamentals of drawing. Once we can carve out more advanced shapes from the side view of a cylinder, we can redraw them in space. This takes practice, but it’s cool!

First, we need to understand simple carving. Then, we can create a graphic shape like a pillar or chest piece by carving it out of the cylinder. At first, it may look wonky because it’s not an actual projection, but it’s a circular projection where the side view is projected in 360° to form that shape.

My favorite contour manipulation of the cylinder is to take the top view, which is a circle, and alter it to a new, more organic shape. Then, we redraw the cylinder. This is similar to box carving, but with more complicated forms and intuition for the cylinder.

Really advanced! Keep practicing. Have fun!
