How to Practice Figure Drawing Efficiently

If you are opening up your sketchbook, picking a random pose on Pinterest, and trying to draw perfect anatomy for two hours, you are completely wasting your practice time (don't worry, I've been there too).

Figure drawing feels incredibly difficult because most artists try to paint the curtains before they’ve built the walls. If you don't master rhythm, balance, and volume first, your figures will always look deformed.

To break out of this loop, you need a highly efficient, professional drawing routine that isolates your weaknesses and builds a bulletproof workflow.

The Artwod Figure Routine (45 Minutes)

Phase 1: Spatial Perspective Setup
5 Minutes

Before drawing a single body part, establish your camera angle. Draw a clear horizon line and plot 3 simple blocks floating at different heights, pitches, and rolls in 3D space. This warms up your brain's spatial awareness and ensures you aren't drawing flat shapes.

Phase 2: The bounding box
15 minutes   One of the hardest things while drawing figure is following your horizon line and perspective. We recommend placing a figure inside a box. This way you know which perspective lines to follow. Practice this until you feel you can confidently draw figure without the box. Also remember, that you can start with drawing only lower or upper parts of the body and then move on to the full body.

Phase 3: Exaggeration and line of action
15 minutes Now let's try exaggerating. Find 3 to 5 references and draw them, following and exaggerating the line of action. If the model is leaning, push them further into the lean. If the spine is curving, turn that curve into a violent arc. Force the force lines to punch through the boundaries of your boxes to inject massive energy into the pose. Understanding rhythm and flow of figures is a crucial step.
Phase 4: Back to construction 
10 minutes Now choose your favourite pose from the previous phase and build solid structure on top of it. Use the volumes you understood in phase 2. Notice, how with construction your gesture will get less expressive. This always happens. This is why while working with gesture you need to exaggerate a lot
