Notice how the illustration becomes more visually interesting when you add graphic shapes to help describe the character's volume, rather than relying only on shadow shapes on one side. Try adding small shape variations along the transition between light and shadow as well, since they make the image even more visually appealing. Pay special attention to these kinds of details in your areas of interest, such as the face.
