I think the composition is actually more than fine. I would suggest try out dramatic lighting like in old (Disney) cartoons.

This is amazing! That rendering with the red lighting is perfect and breathes the approaching atmosphere of a demonic entity. One thing I would have added is softening some of the hard lines of the main character and adding some texture to his features and his coat.
