Hey! I absolutely love this character design. The rugged fantasy vibe actually reminds me a lot of Even Mehl Amundsen's work! To answer your question about why it might feel a bit "flat"—it’s definitely that low-opacity black shadow layer. Pure black or gray tends to make them a little muddy. I did a quick paintover to show how you can push it: Color in Shadows: Instead of black, inject actual color! I used richer, warmer tones for the skin/leather shadows and cooler tones for the metal. Even in a simple style, color temperature shifts instantly make the character feel 3D. Softer Lineart: A heavy, uniform outline can flatten the character like a sticker. I softened the lineart into the colors and let some internal edges get lost in the shadows to help the forms "turn" in space. Grounding: You don't necessarily need grass or rocks to ground him. Adding a simple cast shadow on the floor and playing with the lighting on the character is often enough to anchor him without distracting from your awesome design. You have a fantastic foundation here. Keep up the great work, and I hope this helps you push those colors to the next level! | Artwod Feedback
