Nice spear warrior! Foreshortening is a nice but complicated topic as most of the time our brain will try and reconstruct the entire object we try to convey. So basically our conception of things is symbolistic. This means we are associating symbols to objects. If and object doesn't match what we think as a spear, our brain will start to fight back in order to restore the SYMBOL, not what we see. For the brain: "spear = Long stick with pointy metal/stone tip. Symbolism is an easy an very efficient way for kids to learn the world around them. (example: Bunny = Long ears, long teeth on the front and a fluffy short tail) Long term it help kids understand more complex concepts and ideas. If you analyze a cylinder in forshortening, you will soon realise that you can't show every aspect of it. It's the same for boxes, and every object or character you will draw. The more the forshortening, the less you see of anything than the front shape (depending of the object for example sometimes you can see more than 2 part of the body at the same time) I would recommand when you try to draw forshortening object to simplify them first and slowly add more complexity as you clean your drawing. When you watch at foreshortening object you will also see drastic changes in size since what's close will have this tendency to get bigger than what is in the back. (smaller or hidden) I'll draw some boxes, cylinder and arm to give you an idea. I also notice on your drawing that your hand is not matching the spear direction. so I suggested two solutions. First one, I kept the spear in it's original position. This means you will have to redraw your hand to match it. On the second, I kept the hand in place and redraw the spear. I hope this feedback will help you, feel free to ask more questions. Cheers ! | Artwod Feedback
