Think about the curve, the form of the hair rather than treating it as a flat shape. Thinking of the hair as an organic form will help you paint the volume more effectively. You can also think of the overall shape of the hair as a sphere to figure out where it should receive the most light and how it gradually becomes darker toward the bottom or in areas that aren't facing the light. This is a pretty common way of painting hair in this style. :) Look at different examples and analyze how artists work from the general shapes down to the smaller details.
