Hey there, it's great being brave and blending color surely always IS frightening brrrr! You're asking for a starting point and I'd love to suggest you one with two simple ratios to always get your very basic proporitons in place: 1. Rule of thirds: Maybe you've heard of this before. Basically, you 'cut' the face into three (almost) similar planes. Hairline to Brows, Brows to End of Nose, End of Nose to Chin. Keep in mind, that these can vary, especially the hairline. 2. Splitting the head: This will give you a general height for the eyes to sit in. The other way around, you can just double the length between the eyes and the chin to get your guideline for the top of the head. Quite useful! I hope this is of some value to you.
