Designing original creatures is one of the most exciting skills an artist can develop! Step 1: Choose your creature and study animal references

Start by deciding what kind of creature you want to create. Think about which animals will make up its anatomy - for example, a mix of a bird and a reptile, or a mammal and an insect.

Gather references for each animal and trace them to better understand their structure. Focus on major forms and proportions rather than details.

Next, study the textures of your chosen animals using only lines. Look closely at fur direction, scales, feathers, or skin folds.

Go back to your second mannequin and refine it as well. Use the insights you gained from the first refinement to make stronger choices and explore a slightly different version of the same idea.
