You're studying a great artist here, yoneyama mai has been one of my favourite artists for as long as i can remember, but she's also very difficult artist to study because of her insane line control, and very fluid drawings, with very strong flow and masterful depth and is extremely good at visual storytelling! The best way to begin tackling a study like this would be to break down everything into their primitive forms, and not focusing on detail, then build upon that afterwards! so what i personally did was start with more of a loomis inspired head then add the hair into simple manipulated chunks instead of individual hair strands, then from here i can start adding in detail! Now you don't need to trace your reference though that can be extremely useful for understanding and breaking it down into simple shapes, but ideally when just drawing, it's important to use building blocks one step at a time in order to really learn from what you're drawing!
