Cool concept, i think theres loads of potential here. A great way to go about designing, whether its characters, compositon, illustration, landscape, animation etc. Its to consistently ask yourself one of these questions and variations of these questions based on the purpose of your drawing. What is the purpose? what is he doing? what is he? Focusing on one question often provides better results. then what ever you add to the character, Justify it by Thinking of its FUNCTION and how it can help answer one of the questions. For example. You said he is a scroll Keeper. But yet you had a sword, which is 100% okay, but now youre sending mixed signals about what he actually does. If he is able to fight CQC then we'd introduce more elements that help define his acrobatic and dexterity to wield the sword. For this character, my mindset is to keep it simple and Tripple down on the fact that he is a scroll keeper, And so I gave him more elements of scrolls and changed his staff to a big reading glass which is honestly kinda ridiculous. But it helps assist the Scroll keeping Connotations. i’d also suggest showing more those scrolls that are tucked away on his hip. Hope this helps, keep it up!
