I think you got pretty nice colors and style going. The question is: is paintery look what you really want? You got cell shading style going on. Paintery look would require soft shading normally (can be done by shading in greyscale and then use gradient map/layers in blending modes or actually paint with colors). The reason why it feels like you are using blending mode layers is because your shadows and highlights don't follow your lineart. So when you add layers on top they look disconnected from the actual drawing. I would also either use texture on entire part (noise on the whole wolf) or color edges (white into orange fur border). | Artwod Feedback
