Hey! What a beautiful illustration! Usually, this kind of issue is solved by pushing the lighting contrast a bit more. Try to always create a “dark against light” or “light against dark” relationship. Avoid having the background values too similar to the values of your focal point or foreground elements. In this case, the Virgin and the children have almost the same value range as the background. However, if you darken the Virgin, the characters, and even part of the background slightly, you’ll create more room to introduce stronger and more dramatic lighting. You could add a stronger light behind the Virgin and make the halo brighter as well.
