Sorry for the ugly paintover. I used the previous one and just altered the colors with some poorly applied filters, but it was mainly to show you another example. Another option you could try is limiting your color palette. If the scene is meant to feel a bit more melancholic, I’d try painting with a cooler palette (like the one shown in the image at the top). My reference was from a film that uses this kind of palette to create a more melancholic mood. However, for the colors to work well, you need to make sure the value structure of the illustration is effective. Otherwise, the colors won’t read properly. You could also add more atmospheric perspective by reducing the values in the background (although now that I look at it, I realize I used almost the same values in both the foreground and background haha).
