Paintover

Sorry for the ugly paintover. I used the previous one and just altered the colors with some poorly applied filters, but it was mainly to show you another example. Another option you could try is limiting your color palette. If the scene is meant to feel a bit more melancholic, I’d try painting with a cooler palette (like the one shown in the image at the top). My reference was from a film that uses this kind of palette to create a more melancholic mood. However, for the colors to work well, you need to make sure the value structure of the illustration is effective. Otherwise, the colors won’t read properly. You could also add more atmospheric perspective by reducing the values in the background (although now that I look at it, I realize I used almost the same values in both the foreground and background haha). Hey there! It depends on what your goal is in terms of color and lighting. But assuming this is meant to be a cheerful scene: I would avoid using muted colors across the entire scene if the goal is to make the doctor stand out. Instead, I would use more vivid or saturated colors so that the neutral or muted color of the character stands out more. Likewise, making the scene brighter will help the silhouette stand out even more. Always look for contrasts: Light over dark, dark over light (in this case, dark over light). Cool vs. warm, colorful vs. muted, etc. Having a silhouette in desaturated tones surrounded by more vibrant colors creates a stronger contrast. Also, if you notice, I used the purple tones from the flowers and placed them near the doctor, along with some rays of light filtering through the tree so they hit the character. Now, since this is a brightly lit scene, you can play with warm vs. cool colors, everything exposed to the sunlight can be warm, while the areas under the tree’s shadow can lean toward cooler tones. For color, I highly recommend looking at references, whether from films or other artists (I’d avoid photos, since they’re often edited and the colors can be altered). “Copy” the color palette from the reference you choose and apply it to your illustration. And by “copy,” I don’t mean doing it literally; rather, analyze how the colors behave in the light and shadow, and the relationships between them. Hope this helps!
