Hey Mike! Even if you have the light source in mind, you need to project the cast shadow better by following the simple concept of "light and shadow direction." Which means that you have to trace the light direction and light rays lines for a better cast shadow projection on the ground. This way, you avoid guessing the shadow. For the painting. Use just three values to separate the planes of the shape and a 4th value for the cast shadow. This will allow you to get a solid base (a shadow mapping) and then just keep painting by adding the ambient occlusion, a better transition between lights and shadows, bounce light and so on.
