Hey Marco! First of all, I like the colours you've chosen for this piece, and the yellow that you've used for the eyes, ring, and harpoon; they really pop and guide the eye. Hands are hard! There are elements of yours that are quite good, such as the way the fingers holding the harpoon angle in toward the palm rather than just going straight across the cylinder. The thumb, however, looks too long to me, each joint could be shortened to get a more proportionate result. With the hand coming toward the viewer, the ring finger and pinky are too low in my opinion and the foreshortening could be improved. For what I think you're going for, the joints of the fingers right after the knuckle would be above the knuckle still so we wouldn't see it. For hands, because they are so tricky, I'll often use my own as reference when I'm drawing, and even take photos for poses such as this. Otherwise, there are is some great rendering done to the torso, and I like the hinting at scales on the tail, but I think you could give the tail, tail fin and even the hair more attention; I think they would benefit from even thin lines (lower weight) that reinforce the underlying forms (ie the tapered cylinder of the tail) and add some texture and extra dimension as right now, to me they read a bit flat. You need to understand how shapes and their perspectives work in space, as well as image composition in terms of what you want to give protagonism to. If you place the tail at the same level and size, side by side with the upper body/trunk, you're telling the viewer to also pay attention to it, which is not the intention unless it plays a fundamental role — for example, in a confrontation. Maybe in a strange scenario where the tail comes to life and wants to fight against the mermaid.

I think I'm getting comfortable with form, but I still struggle with color and material rendering. I often treat every surface the same way, which makes it difficult to differentiate between materials like skin, metal, and cloth.

checkmate im aussie
This isn't for the june challenge or anything, but i drew these two chess-inspired characters. Since they're based around the knight piece, i wanted there to be a visual motif of three. Three individual shapes found in the nose steam, three splits in the knight's hair thingy, three segments in the handle, you get the point. I just feel like i could've done much more with this concept, or like it's too subtle. Any suggestions? Please let me know!
