the spikes read less if you block the hair as two or three big soft shapes first, then break the edge. maybe keep the back mass a bit fuller so it sits on the skull instead of floating

I’ve been trying to draw anime short hair but it always ends up looking like random spikes. I think my shape language and volume need work. Using pencil, what should i focus on?
