Sci-Fi Loot Box Design: Creating Engaging Concept Art

Good prop design doesn’t start with cool details - it starts with solid form. In this art workout, you’ll build a lootbox design from the ground up by combining simple 3D shapes, real-world object logic, and reference analysis.

The goal is to move beyond copying and start designing with intention.

Step 1: Draw 5 Manipulated Boxes

Start by drawing five boxes in perspective. Then manipulate them - stretch, round corners and shift proportions.

Focus on:

  • Clear perspective

  • Interesting silhouettes

  • Variation in proportions

These boxes are your structural sci-fi playground.

Step 2: Draw an Everyday Artificial Object

Pick a man-made object - something functional and futuristic looking, like an electric razor, pen sharpener, power bank or a VR headset if you have one.

Pay attention to:

  • All the tech details

  • How materials change depending on the function.

  • What parts look reinforced

Remember, you’re collecting design logic, not decoration. Especially if you want your lootbox to be functional.

Step 3: Study a Lootbox Reference

Choose a lootbox design from a game and analyze it.

Ask yourself:

  • What makes it feel valuable?

  • Where is the focal point?

  • How are shapes layered?

  • How does it suggest weight or durability?

Break it down into simple forms before thinking about details.

Step 4: Redesign the Lootbox

Take one of your manipulated boxes from Step 1 and redesign it.

Use:

  • Structural ideas from your box

  • Functional logic from your everyday object

  • Design inspiration from the lootbox reference

Blend them together so the object feels believable and cohesive - not like random parts stuck together.

Strong lootbox design comes from structure, functionality, and thoughtful shape language. When you combine simple forms with real-world elements, your designs become clearer, more intentional, and more game-ready.

Now push it further. Refine your concept, explore variations, and share your design for feedback.

Design with purpose - not just detail.
