To avoid getting caught in the details, I suggest focusing on the light areas and shadows and forgetting about drawing eyes/nose/mouth - that gets you stuck in drawing them how you think they should be, not how they actually look in the reference. Focus on the light and shadows and get all the general shapes in before you even start thinking about detail!

I have a hard time making sure my proportions are good, and I am also not great at adding values to my portraits yet. When I try to draw a person's face from refrence i tend to get caught up in the details, and I have a hard time capturing the actual photo. Reference is from Studio Fiene.
