Drawing Superhero Capes: Tips for Dynamic Flow and Movement
Drawing drapery can be extremely overwhelming for beginner artists. All the folds, their directions and overlaps might seem like a mystery. If you want to challenge yourself, and finally learn how to draw drapery, we suggest you start with capes. They can be a great addition to your character designs, bringing movement and drama.
Step 1: Draw 6 paper planes that are bending and twisting
Start simple. Before drawing realistic fabric, practice with easy paper planes. Imagine paper planes bending and twisting, and fill the canvas with 6 of those.

Step 2: Draw six paper planes that are compressed from both sides, creating pipe fold
Now let’s apply pressure (or, how we call it at Artwod - let’s create points of compression). Notice how pipefolds are being created, and remember the T-lines!

Step 3: Draw 2 larger planes attached to a single point and two longer planes attached to 2 points, creating drop or diaper folds
Let’s make it even harder and practice diaper and drop folds. Do they remind you of something? If you’re thinking “pipefolds”, you’re right! All of the folds are actually pipe folds, radiating from different points of tension.

Step 4: Study or trace a cape you like
Find some inspiring reference online, and study the cape. Pay attention to these points of compression and tension, trying to find connection and logic.
Step 5: Add a cape to one of the provided super-heroes
Final super hero challenge! Choose one of the provided super-heroes and add a cape to them. Remember everything you’ve learned so far, and it should be pretty easy. By practicing in the previous steps you’ve prepared yourself to draw a cape from imagination.

Bonus step: Design your own superhero with a cape
If you feel ready, try and design your own superhero. One condition! They need to have a cape!
Great job! You just learned how to transform flat shapes into sweeping, dramatic capes full of motion and personality. Keep practicing - and soon your characters will be ready to fly off your sketchbook page!
