Hey! What a lovely illustration so far! I really like your art style. :) When it comes to lighting, it's essential to keep the direction of the light in mind. You need to establish where the light is coming from before you begin painting. I chose to have the light come from the upper-right side, which means that half of the character's face would be in shadow, and the entire right side of the character (the left side from your point of view) would remain in shadow. If you find it difficult to shade complex forms, try thinking of everything as simple forms first, that is, cylinders and boxes. This can help simplify the process before adding more complexity by painting more interesting shadow shapes. But always start simply by blocking in the graphic shapes of the shadows. There are plenty of resources you can study to better understand light and shadow. One of them is the Asaro Head.
