Hello there! I really like the illustration so far! The main thing I'd work on is the lighting, since it feels a bit inconsistent. From what I can tell, the main light source is coming from above rather than from a strong 3/4 angle. However, you've painted a rim light along the character's side as if it were coming from the right, even though the tree canopy would completely block direct sunlight. Because of that, the scene feels as if it has two different directions of light. Another thing is the cast shadows. Since the character is standing in the shade, the axe shouldn't be casting such a defined shadow onto the log. Without direct sunlight reaching that area, those cast shadows wouldn't appear the way they do now. What I did instead was keep the character and everything beneath the tree canopy, mostly in shadow. To make the character stand out, I imagined sunlight filtering through gaps in the leaves, creating patches of light across the figure. Those dappled light patterns make the lighting much more interesting while keeping it consistent with the environment. One last thing: although there isn't true atmospheric perspective in space, you can still suggest a sense of depth by using the sun rays themselves to separate the planes of the scene. Even if it's technically not atmospheric perspective, it can be a very effective artistic tool for enhancing depth. Hope this helps! :) | Artwod Feedback
