This is such a cool piece!! I think your rendering is already pretty solid, lighting-wise I just looked at the lighting situation of the face (> lit slightly from above) so I brought out those light tones and and continued it on the top of the head, ear & shoulders. Another (minor) adjustment I did was the angle of the ear, but overall I think this is a great piece, keep up the good work! c:

I’ve realized that I didn’t really respect the almost-nightfall atmosphere. I think that, to achieve a more subdued mood, I would have worked with darker transparent layers... but I’m not a professional. It’s just an opinion.

helloo, Overcast is a very tricky lighting scenario to paint, I tried to maintain your value structure as best I can and pushed for more contrast by presenting more occluded shadows in gaps where it makes sense, Also because overcast difffuses the Light source, we actually see more softer shadows and more midtones on edges where the form Turns away from the camera. I also noticed how hard (sharp) the shadow is on the neck, which usually means the light would have more strength, if you'd like to go down this route then I would suggest making the areas of light Brighter to justify the hard shadow. that you would have clearer distinctions of Light midtone and shadows.

Hello! I really like your illustration. This mermaid has a lot of personality. I think it’s mainly a matter of contrast. For example, on the rocks you only added a line along the edges for the light… I think it could have worked well to soften and blend that part a bit more. Also, adding highlights within the shadows can help give more volume and strength to the forms. I toned down the brightness and the details in the background a little. I hope this is useful to you.
