Now i don't have your reference image, but the most important thing when rendering in general is to keep the rendering consistent, and if you want to define planes and get the drawing to look more believable use larger brush strokes and keep everything consistent, think of light and shadows as their own shapes, think of them as "planes" that the light hits and diffuses from it, like how i did with the forehead, and actively keep asking yourself where the light source is coming from, hope this helps, another tip is the stronger your construction is of your underdrawings the easier it will be to render afterwards as well, especially for proportions! going back on the brush strokes part, if you mix highly detailed small strokes with large brush strokes the drawing feels inconsistent so stick to either a super detailed drawing everywhere, or like i did here, larger strokes that are more uniform, and blend accordingly. hope this helps, happy drawing!
