Breaking things down to into 3D forms and planes can help you decide where the light and shadows go, you can try to use a 3D model of an asaro head as a reference to help with the lighting on the face. For the shadows, make sure the cast shadows have sharper edges like the one on the face casts by the nose. For the hair, try to treat it as big shapes, and layered with smaller shapes and shade them accordingly, take care of the highlights, cast shadows and occlusion shadows it can have. You can add a bounce light of the orange to give more interest and depth to the piece.
