Texture is more about value and light/shadow than detail. You’re creating the illusion of detail rather than drawing the detail itself. Think about the material you’re trying to draw and how light interacts with it. Is the surface shiny? Is it matte? Is it smooth or are there cracks or holes in it? Always work big to small. Start with the largest shapes, the biggest shadows first. Small details come last. Lastly try not to create texture in one go. Use multiple passes, building up the values and the details in layers.
