Once you have that, think about dividing it into different “strands” or ribbons. Thinking this way will give you a better idea of how to paint the hair and which areas will be lit and which will be in shadow. You can also think of the hair as geometric forms. For example, in the drawing on the right, I traced red lines showing the square or rounded shape of each “strand.” This makes it easier to understand which areas should be shaded (depending on the light). From there, you can add smaller shadows to suggest additional strands of hair. You can apply the same concept to clothing. Think of folds as cylinders—meaning you’ll have one side in shadow and another catching the light.
