This would help emphasize the silhouette and make the character stand out much more effectively. Keeping the character darker also creates a stronger contrast against the background, giving you that classic "dark against light" relationship. Always try to look for these kinds of value contrasts—dark against light or light against dark. What you generally want to avoid is having similar value ranges across the background, midground, and foreground, since that can make the image feel flatter and harder to read. You'll also notice that when the character is darkened, the red shifts toward a deeper crimson or burgundy tone.
