Keep in mind that when you have a light source behind an object, it will generally appear dark, with its silhouette being the main thing that stands out. You can still introduce secondary light sources, like a rim light, or use ambient light to help define and enhance the volume of the whale or any other element. However, when painting, try to keep your values within a consistent range. Avoid using very bright values to light areas like the top of the whale or the teeth if they’re not directly lit. You could also add a subtle glow along the sides of the whale to suggest that backlighting effect, like when the sun is behind the subject. Also, add some extra elements in the background to add more story to the scene, otherwise, it would be boring having just a whale in the FG. Hope this helps!
