Hey there I'd say that avoiding drawing or learning anime directly without learn realism first. Studying realism will allow you to learn about proportions, perspective and complex things that you can translate it easily to anime later. But you must understand how to draw the head in different angles, which shows your understanding of perspective. That's the other thing, learn perspective, since this will allow you to draw the facial features correctly. Learn the proportions of the face to avoid drawing the eyes too close to each other, too separated, and so on.
