You are already doing a great job! The messy lines are the result of trying to find the pose. I think they happen because those are hard poses and they require us to really think about how the body is positioned. We see the pose and think we know how to draw it until we put pen to paper. That’s when we start to see that it’s more complex than we thought. I think something that could help you is to draw lightly the gesture line before hand, maybe even a few simple volumes to help you understand and mark the proportions and the feel of the pose. Understanding how the rib cage, the hipbone and head are tilted is no easy task and i think you are alteady doing a good job. Something that might help: You can look out for certain landmarks of the body, for example the bony ends of the rib cage or the iliac crest of the Hip bone (in most people these are visible on the surface). These points usually show you in which direction the hip or the rib cage is tilted. For the head you can look at the eyes. Draw a line through the eyes and you will see how the head is tilted. Other things that can help you are questions like: Am I looking from above or under The figure? Can I see the top of the head? How much of the side can I see? I think if you keep these in mind, and commit to your lines and forms you will be faster at understanding how the body works and draw with more confidence. One last tip for the messy lines: try drawing with pen, so you can’t erase the lines. It forces you to think about the pose before drawing. Hope this helps!
