Once you set that, it's easier to project the shadows in the character. You can imagine or break down each part of the character into cylinders or spheres, that way you'll have in mind what areas will be brighter and what areas will be in shadows. It's like shading simple shapes. On the other hand. I'd recommend you practice simple shapes as spheres, boxes, cylinders, and so on. Place the light source and project the cast shadow.
