Not seeing an image here but what I can say about rendering is it is all about contrast and light. Choose where your light is coming from and then start out with light pencil and gradually move toward the darkest darks. What most people get wrong is the amount of values from light to dark. There needs to be enough values to create the illusion of realism. You need dark darks and bright highlights in order to have enough room for the multiple values needed to gradually transition between them. The image I drew here simply shows the transition from the darkest darks in the creases to the lightest lights in the highlights.
