this artist has a very heavy emphasis on their value groups rather than defining shapes with lines, they're essentially drawing the shadows without outlines. Notice how the lines in certain areas, such as the nose, lips, and eyelids, are broken and incomplete. This is because theyre drawing the dark shadow shapes instead of the outline of the shape. values are essentially the brightness of a certain part of an image, most visible when viewing a greyscale image. our brains tend to focus on detail over value, so squinting or unfocusing your eyes when looking at your reference makes it much easier to see the simple value shapes and translate them to paper.

You’re already doing great!! I think if you focus on form manipulation, and really understand how shapes move in space you’ll feel closer to your goal. Afterwords shading will become a lot easier too, giving you more of that effortless sketch-like look 9brookskim is known for.
