Hi there, It’s looking pretty good overall. There’s just a few things regarding form that will help you. Regardless of whether you’re working off of a photo or drawing from life the principles remain the same. You want to think about the encompassing shape (in this case a cylinder) and use that to help keep things in perspective. Because we’re looking at the top of the chess piece, the bottom is furthest away from us and will actually look rounder. A cylinder can be thought of as individual slices, or circles, stacked on top of each other. As those circles get closer to the horizon (eye level with the viewer) they will look flatter. It’s subtle and can be difficult to see when you’re drawing something small from life. Drawing the encompassing shape first will also help you to keep your drawing symmetrical. As for the shading, it’s a little hard to tell where your light source is coming from. It seems to be from the left hand side but there are elements in the drawing that look like it’s back lit. One of the problems of life drawing, if you’re using natural lighting, is that the sun moves and will change the lighting depending on how long you spend on it. For indicating shadows I would recommend using cross hatching as you can use this to further indicate the form. If you need reference then I would also recommend using a strong directional light to keep it simple. | Artwod Feedback
