Saying you want to move from construction to some rendering is a bit like saying you want to move from mixing the cake batter to some icing. You can’t do one without the other. I know you mean you want to make your drawings look more polished and not just focus on the basics, but you have to carry the basics through every stage of your drawing. Rendering IS a form of construction, especially when you’re rendering solely with line. Rendering is not just about light and shadow, it’s also about indicating the form. So your hatching should follow the contour of the form you are trying to render. Your contour lines can either go down the length of the form or wrap around them. Rendering is a pretty big topic because it encompasses a lot of different disciplines such as light and shadow, form, values etc. it can be used to indicate different materials and textures and it can be used to draw the viewers eye to the things you want them to look at. But none of that is possible without a strong understanding of the fundamentals. So if you try to think of rendering more as an aid to indicating form that will set you up better for more advanced techniques. | Artwod Feedback
