Swamp Monster 02

I'm struggling with consistent lighting and getting the background to look natural while not making everything look flat and the main plant blending into the background. This is part of a series of ACEO sized composition tests before I make a larger series of paintings. I used watercolour brush pen and some coloured pencil and fine liners. It is inspired by a real plant, the monstera deliciosa, that I saw at a water park. The leaf scars resemble eyes on the trunk and I thought they'd make great comic book characters. I've never done anything comic book style, so it's not entirely how I imagined, but I still like them and I feel like each iteration is getting better.
