Good question and there’s many different ways you can go about measuring proportions. Proportions are all about relationships. How does one thing compare to another? In the top image I’m using the head as a measuring guide. Using that you can see the bottom of the pecs are 1 head down from the chin. The bellybutton is about 3/4 of a head down from the pecs. The torso is about 4 heads tall. You can also see how much of the neck is visible to the left of the hand. The hand itself is on the right hand side of the face, not the middle. There are lots of different landmarks you can use. The bottom image is to demonstrate the negative space technique. That’s where you look at the shapes around the object. The main thing I want to point out with your study however is that you are moving into detail too quickly. You’re also drawing what you think is there rather than what is actually there. The abs, as an example, don’t look anything like the reference because you’re trying to draw what you think abs look like. You’re icing the cake before you’ve even mixed the ingredients. You need the structure, the cake, first. Try spending more time on the larger shapes first. | Artwod Feedback
