Shading is tough! I think it's important to have a clear light source in mind first and then apply it consistently over the volumes of the subject. In this case I put the light source behind/above it, so the top of the head/ears will be lit, but then get darker towards the face. When you're working traditionally, this is extra difficult as you have to either keep those areas free to let through the light of the paper. that's why I really like practising on slightly brown/grey paper because I like adding highlights with chalk to make it pop more.
