1. If you struggle with colors I would suggest to try to render in grayscale and then use color layers with blending modes and/or gradient map (there are tutorials on YT for it). Values are way more important for a painting than colors. You can use random colors and it will still look good as long as values are good. (This is what I tried to this in this paintover- converted image to greyscale, changed values, used gradient map). 2. I would try to go for dramatic lighting from above to put him in the center of attention. Good luck and don't get discouraged by colorblindness.
