Not only will it give the character better volume, but it will also strengthen the overall mood of the piece. Notice that I kept the light primarily on the face to reinforce the focal point, while grouping most of the surrounding elements into darker values since they don't carry as much visual importance. Adding a few more saturated tones to the face, particularly on the cheeks and the tip of the nose, will help bring more life and color vibrancy to the skin.
