Hey there! I think there are two main issues here. The first is clarity. At first glance, it wasn't immediately clear what I was looking at, and it took me a little while to understand what you described in your post. Remember that line quality plays a huge role in readability. Try to avoid using thick lines everywhere; use them for the contour, overlapping forms, and areas of shadow. The second is the overall shape of the plant. A simple way to approach organic forms like this is to first think of them as a basic plane that has been bent or twisted. In the red sketch, I first blocked in the overall shape of the plant to show how it twists around and creates that "hugging" effect you mentioned. Once that simple structure is in place, it's much easier to draw the individual leaves on top while keeping the overall form believable.
