I really like what you've done so far! One thing I would suggest is adding more information to the scene. Right now, it feels a bit too simple, so it isn't fully communicating the idea you've described. You could paint the silhouettes of buildings in the background, almost treating them like distant mountains. Likewise, remember that the foreground is a great place to add narrative elements and visual storytelling, so consider including ruined buildings or other props that help convey the history of the scene. That said, simply painting a few blocky structures won't do much to communicate the scale between the character and the environment. Adding some trees could help establish a stronger sense of scale and provide better visual reference for the size of the buildings. You could also place some buildings or other elements along the sides of the composition, leaving the center area more open so the character stands out more clearly.
