However, I think the main issue is that you haven’t established a clear lighting setup yet, which is why you're struggling a bit with the value grouping. I’d recommend deciding on the lighting for the scene first, so you can group your values more effectively. For example, you could have the light coming from the window, illuminating only part of the room, or have the main light source coming from the doorway instead. You’ll notice that once the lighting is clearly established, the values naturally become better grouped and better support the mood of the scene. Also, keep in mind that you don’t always have to follow the rule of "dark foreground, light background." It all depends on the mood and the lighting you’re trying to achieve, which is why it’s always a good idea to gather references that match the look you're aiming for.
